Service
with a smile is not a slogan for Jarnail Kandola, it's a way of life--it
seems he just can't help it. Kandola is retail associate in Saint Joseph
Health Center's Food Court. He is also the health center's Employee of
the Year.
In an environment where customer service is a very
high priority, Kandola goes the extra mile. Co-workers say he always has
a smile on his face and that he remains calm and helpful even when the
lines in the Food Court get long and the customers get cranky.
"I try very hard to keep my customers happy,"
says Kandola. "Many times, visitors and employees have a lot on their
minds and they might get impatient--but that-s part of the job."
Kandola's supervisors say he sets an example for the
entire retail team. He looks for and takes care of the small details customers
to the Food Court may need. They say he not only takes care of customers
but co-workers as well--working extra days if need be and always with
the ever-present smile.
"He'll come in early, come back, call from home
on his day off," said Lee Ann Turner. "He's very efficient."
Kandola was supposed to be off the day he was named
Employee of the Year, but he was there and very curious as to what was
happening. "We were setting up for something and I was asking everyone
'What's going on?' But no one would tell me. We usually know about celebrations
and meetings because we have to set up for it."
But everyone was very closed mouthed. "It was
very strange, because everyone was here--the supervisors, the chef, everyone",
says Kandola.
"Then they announced I was the Employee of the
Year--and I thought it was a joke!" Kandola says he's honored to
be named Employee of the Year. He's developed many friendships in his
five and a half years with Saint Joseph Health Center. "I work with
nice, friendly people."
