Sleep, or lack of it, is getting more attention than
ever. It's estimated more than 100 million Americans of all ages regularly
fail to get a good night's sleep and for many, the reason is a sleep disorder.
The only way to know if you have a sleep disorder is to
have a sleep study. And while it's important and necessary, restful is
usually not used to describe a sleep study. They are usually done in a
hospital or sleep lab. During the study, several sensors are applied to
monitor sleeping patterns, breathing, movement, heart rate, oxygen levels,
etc.
In a first for this area, St. Mary's Hospital of Blue
Springs and the Adam's Mark Hotel have teamed up to make sleep studies
more comfortable and, well more restful.
"This move is good for patients and for us,"
explains Mark Yotter, RRT, coordinator of the Sleep Lab for St. Mary's
Hospital. "Before moving to the Adam's Mark, we were limited to just
one study per night. A person had to wait several weeks or as long as
a couple of months for their study. This move allows us to expand without
having to take up space at the hospital and allows for further expansion,
if needed, in the future."
"Our goal is to help patients relax and get the
most out of the study. A large percentage of cancellations are because
people don't want to come to the hospital. They may be tired, but they
don't believe they're sick--so why go to a hospital? They're much more
willing to go to a hotel. The Adam's Mark provides amenities such as a
pool, sauna, exercise room and restaurants allowing patients to relax
and enjoy the facilities before the study."
"Sleep disorders can be very serious," says
Yotter. "Lack of sleep affects us both mentally and physically. Anything
we can do to make it easier for people to find out what's causing sleep
deprivation is great."
