Helen Reiter, Saint Joseph Health Center Volunteer of the Year

It's a very tough job, choosing a Volunteer of the Year. All
volunteers deserve to be recognized for the services they provide Carondelet
Health. That said, each year, members of a committee at Saint Joseph Health
Center agonize to choose just one Volunteer of the Year.
This year, Helen Reiter has the honor. Mrs. Reiter volunteers in Marketing
and Planning, opening, reviewing and sorting thousands of patient satisfaction
surveys received by Carondelet Health. But over the more than 25 years
she's been with the health center, she's done a little bit of just about
everything.
"I actually started at the old hospital," (at Linwood and Prospect) says
Mrs. Reiter. "We were forming the auxiliary for the new hospital." (The
hospital moved in 1977.) She's also worked in Medical Records, Admitting,
was chair of the Medical Museum and served on the Advisory Council Executive
Board. At the time, she was the only woman on the Advisory Council. "I
really wielded the whip on the fellows," she teases.
In the letter nominating Mrs. Reiter as the Volunteer of the Year, someone
compared her to the pink bunny in the battery ad. "She keeps going, and
going, and going…" She has no intention of stopping anytime soon.
"I'm very honored," she says. "And surprised. There are so many people
who deserve to be Volunteer of the Year. I really do get more out of it
than I give. I just love being with all the people around here. It's really
a caring, wonderful place with caring, wonderful people."
