They are among the most frightening words a woman can
hear-"you've got breast cancer." One out of nine women
in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
It is the most common type of cancer in women in the United States.
Knowing what you're dealing with and getting early treatment can
mean the difference between life and death.
"Mammography is so important in the fight against breast cancer,"
says Lisa Simpson, RTM, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
"A mammogram can find things still too small to feel. That
leads to quicker treatments and better outcomes."
St. Mary's Hospital is making it easier for women to get the screening.
A second mammography machine and an added technologist means the
hospital can offer mammography from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through
Friday. "The extended hours have made it much more convenient
for working women," says Simpson. "The wait for an appointment
used to be as long as eight weeks. Now we can usually see them within
a week-and they can come in before or after work."
Simpson says not only will you not have to wait for an appointment;
you won't have to wait once you get to the hospital. "We value
their time," says Simpson. "We aim for 15 minutes from
the time they sign in at the Radiology desk to the time they're
dressed and back on their way. It is a short procedure and the benefits
are tremendous."
