The mind can be a powerful asset in your life and one way to tap into the power is through hypnosis. We're not talking about the stage-show, "quack like a duck" hypnosis used for entertainment. We're talking about a simple, effective tool to improve certain aspects of your life.

The Well*Life Department of Carondelet Health offers self-hypnosis classes for those who want to lose weight and those who want to quit smoking. "Giving up smoking and losing weight are hard," says Christine McCrite, a certified hypnotherapist and class instructor. "Hypnosis allows us to get the subconscious mind involved in the effort and I think it's the most relaxing way to make these positive changes."

McCrite says our subconscious minds are very receptive to suggestions. "In weight loss, people are told from a very young age to eat everything on their plates because there are starving people in the world. That repetitive message gets into our subconscious. Through hypnosis we can place a different more healthy message-eat less, exercise more and drink more water."

"This class took the mystery out of hypnosis and I was able to see how to use this technique for several aspects of my life," says Jeanette Metzler. "Even though I took the hypnosis for weight class, I have been using what I learned to help me sleep and to deal with every day stress."

Each participant can purchase a CD or cassette to listen to after the class to reinforce the technique. McCrite says she doesn't have scientific research showing results, but adds, "The classes fill up fast, and many people hear about it through friends who have had success."

"It's really easy to learn to use hypnosis for self-improvement," says McCrite. "But, you have to want to make the changes. Hypnosis will not make you do something you don't want to do--you still have to be willing to give up smoking and overeating. Involving your subconscious will make it much easier."
