Within any hospital, you'll find competent, caring physicians, but some go above and beyond in their caring-every day. The physician who stands out this year at Saint Joseph Health Center is Walter Bender, MD, specializing in nephrology, treating disorders related to the kidneys and kidney functions.
The nursing staff at Saint Joseph Health Center names the Physician of the Year and Dr. Bender says that makes the honor even more special. The nurses say they love working with him, he values their input, treats them with respect, is a good listener and a great teacher.
"Dr. Bender is very compassionate," a nurse writes in the nomination. "He takes the time to sit and talk and explain things in terms patients can understand. His patients really trust him."
Dr. Bender says he's flattered by being named physician of the year, but is matter-of-fact about his relationships with people. His approach is very simple, "I just treat people the way I'd like to be treated."
