If you start it, they will come. That is the case for the St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Spring's cardiac support group.
In the fall issue of HealthWorks, we reported the support group would start meeting in September. The response has been overwhelming. "We've had more than 50 people every time," says Susan Brawner, RN, Cardiac Rehab coordinator. "It's standing room only. It shows there was really a need-and we're meeting the need."
The group not only provides continuing education to cardiac patients but also socialization and emotional support. "Some of the people coming had been patients some time ago," says Brawner. "So it's really been fun to catch up and see how everyone is doing. A lot of husbands and wives come together-it's been really fun."
Programs have included hypertension, nutrition and spiritual support. Participants get the chance to ask questions, mingle and enjoy some heart-healthy snacks. The group meets the 1st Thursday of every month, alternating mornings at 10 a.m. and evenings at 7 p.m. The next meeting is January 2 at 10 a.m.
