Meet Sister Margaret Vincent

Sister Margaret Vincent and Sister Rosemary Flanigan.
Sister Margaret Vincent and Sister Rosemary Flanigan.
They'd become very recognizable, the sisters who serve as spokespersons for Carondelet Health. TV viewers have seen Sister Mary Kay Hadican and Sister Rosemary Flanigan in racing gear, reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and debating the nutritional values of donuts, pizza and carrots. But, no longer.

Sister Mary Kay Hadican, who had been the executive vice president of Mission for Carondelet Health, has left Kansas City to serve in a leadership position within the Sisters of St. Joseph Province based in St. Louis.

The campaign featuring the sisters was started about three years ago. "The tradition of the sisters is what sets us apart from other hospitals," says Debbie Brinkoetter, director of Public Relations for Carondelet Health. The campaign has been very successful. Awareness of Carondelet Health has jumped significantly.

"We really wanted to continue this strategy," says Brinkoetter. "And we wanted someone who had a strong history with the organization. Sister Margaret Vincent is a registered nurse and has been with Saint Joseph Health Center for 18 years. We are just thrilled she agreed to take part."

Sister Margaret works in the Seniors Clinic and in the Emergency Department. She says some people may not even notice the change. "I see a lot of people in the areas I work," says Sister Margaret. "Many people thought I was 'the one in the ad.' I can see why someone would think that. Sister Mary Kay and I both wear glasses, we're close to the same age and we both have short black and gray hair. But I'm taller," she adds with a laugh.

"I regret having to stand with someone taller than I," jokes Sister Rosemary. "But other than that, she's great. It's very nice being teamed up with a nurse. The work of our nurses is so important."

It's evident there is respect and chemistry between the two. They've served on Carondelet Health's Ethics and Human Values Committee together and are old friends. They share holiday dinners together. "We have a standing group that gets together Thanksgiving and Christmas," says Sister Rosemary. "We trade off, depending on Sister Margaret's work schedule."

She's not a bit nervous about the upcoming commercial schedule. She already has some TV experience. "I was in an ad several years ago when St. Mary's Hospital became part of Carondelet Health and I was interviewed for a news story about the importance of wearing bike helmets." Sister Margaret is a cycling enthusiast. If you're looking for her on a day off, chances are you'll find her on a bike path. She has ridden in several MS 150s.

Sister Margaret says she is honored to speak on behalf of Carondelet Health. "The Sisters of St. Joseph have always had a presence here. Our tradition of healing, caring and compassion is carried on every day and I am glad to be a part of tradition."
