The last thing most of us want to do on the weekend
is the same kind of thing we do all week long. But that's not the
case for a several nurses at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
The first weekend of each month, Susan Brawner, Mary Shalley, Kathy
Mann, Beth Creason, Donna O'Rouke and Denise Zeikle, all registered
nurses, volunteer to do blood pressure checks at St. John La Lande
Catholic Church in Blue Springs.
"Father Don (Farnan) wanted to establish a parish
health ministry," says Susan Brawner, RN, cardiac rehabilitation
coordinator. "There are several of us from St. Mary's Hospital
who are members of the parish, so we did a health fair and survey
to determine what the needs were and decided to regularly schedule
the blood pressure checks."
"We
started about a year ago and get 40 to 50 people every month,"
says Brawner. "It a little something we can do that may have
a big pay-offs for the health of our parishioners. We advise them
on where their blood pressures should be and what they can do to
help get it there."
"We wanted to do something to serve the parish-and
this is what we do," says Susan. "It just seems appropriate
to use our God-given gifts in His house."
