A sunset taken in Maui, Hawaii is Dr. Block's favorite photo. |
When St. Mary's Hospital opened the expanded Emergency Department, it had the best medical equipment, bigger exam rooms, a private waiting area, and new floors and paint. But, just like when you move to a new house, the walls were bare-there was no art on display.
The bare walls sort of bothered Stephanie Block, the wife of Dennis Block, DO, a physician in the Emergency Room. She had seen photos physicians had taken displayed at other hospitals, and liked the idea. She knew just where to find suitable photos-in her husband's collection.

Not all the photos are from far away places. This photo was taken in the Block's backyard. |
Lighthouses are the subjects of many of the Block's photos. |
"We take a lot of short trips," says Dr. Block, "and we take a lot of pictures. She picked a few, had them blown up, bought frames and took care of it."
The photos were taken over the past seven years-since the couple's honeymoon. In fact, the shot of the beach is from Maui, taken during honeymoon. (That's Dr. Block's favorite.) There is a collection of lighthouses, taken in several locations. There are shots from Branson, San Antonia and Colorado. But he didn't travel far for all of them. One, of two cardinals in the snow could be the cover of a holiday card. It was taken in the Blocks' backyard-through a dining room window.

The works are a team effort. Dr. Block says he took most of the photos, but his wife has the eye. "She's always pointing out great shots," says Dr. Block. "I'd probably miss them." He shrugs off complements of how professional they look. "I just hit auto focus and shoot."
"I really enjoy sharing the photos with the patients," says Dr. Block. "It provides something to talk about-it's just fun."
