traditional surgical and post-op techniques have allowed. Top-of-the-line
quality appliances, patient education and group rehab therapy
allow you to resume normal life activities sooner with little need
for home care.
The St. Joseph Knee and Hip Center is also committed
to research and development. New methods of diagnosis and treatment
are always being explored. Recipients of artificial joints benefit
from this invaluable wealth of clinical information.
What is Total Joint Replacement?
A total joint replacement removes the worn bone
of a joint and replaces it with a metal and/or plastic prosthesis
which allows the joint to regain its normal function. The new implant
relieves pain and improves mobility of the joint. It is a positive
approach for dealing with a range of problems affecting the knees
and hips.
Who Needs Joint Replacement?
Most joint replacement patients are people whose
joints have worn out due to arthritis. They suffer from pain, stiffness
and loss of function. However, joint replacements are not limited
to joints worn out by years of wear and tear. Injuries which did
not heal properly, chronic illness and congenital deformities may
cause loss of mobility and pain.
Recovery
You will recover with fellow hip and knee replacement patients. We the focus on wellness, group activity and self-care, this approach improves chances for a speedy recovery. While you recover, you'll begin to resume activities of daily living with the help of our support team of professionals. Members of the team will teach you proper positioning, range of motion and strengthening exercises and recovery techniques tailored to your needs. The team will assist you first in sitting up at the bedside, then standing and progressing to walking with the assistance of a walker or crutches. You will also practice climbing stairs prior to leaving the hospital. In addition, an exercise video or DVD will be sent home with you to guide you through your recovery process.
