Laboratory Services at
St. Mary's Medical Center

St. Mary's Medical Center Laboratory offers comprehensive testing services that provide physicians and their patients with timely results that are crucial to their diagnosis and treatment. The Laboratory Department uses state-of-the-art instrumentation and technology to perform testing procedures in the clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, blood bank and pathology sections. St. Mary's Medical Center Laboratory is managed by Physicians Reference Laboratory, LLC (PRL). PRL is a regional independent laboratory that was founded in 1976 by Pierre Keitges, M.D.. St. Mary's Medical Center Laboratory is also a member of the Regional Laboratory Alliance along with nine other hospitals located in the Kansas City area and provides services to communities in Eastern Jackson County and beyond.

Accredited by the College of American Pathologists

St. Mary's Medical Center has been awarded an accreditation by the College of American Pathologists based on a 2001 on site inspection. St. Mary's Medical Center received national recognition for their "excellence of services provided" and is one of more than 6,000 CAP accredited labs nationwide. The CAP accreditation is awarded only after inspectors examine the records for quality control for the previous two years, as well as the education and qualifications for the total staff, the adequacy of the facility, the equipment, safety, laboratory management and how well the laboratory is serving the patient.

Our Laboratory Staff

A team of highly skilled professionals staffs the Laboratory Department. The pathologists are physicians with specialized training in the area of clinical laboratory medicine and pathology. Medical technologists working in the laboratory have a bachelor of science degree and have completed additional internship training with an accredited hospital training program and have passed credentialing examinations. Laboratory assistants and phlebotomists are support staff with extensive training in blood drawing technique and specimen collection. Together this team provides the highest level of quality patient care.
