Spiritual Care at Carondelet Health

Illness, trauma and even the aging process disrupt the normal rhythm of our lives and make them unbalanced. When the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet first came to Kansas City and founded St. Joseph Medical Center and later, when the now called Franciscan Sisters of Mary established St. Mary's Medical Center, they were all concerned about the whole person. Times have changed and hospitals have merged, but the impact of the Sisters' caring has not. Healing of the body, mind, and spirit for all those who come remains a hallmark of the care received all through the Carondelet Health system. Our staff of certified Chaplains and Chaplain Interns enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Education program, seeks to bring a compassionate presence to our patients and their families, and helps them regain the awareness of God in those moments of chaos and disease.

For those who reside in our extended care facilities, Chaplains are also present to assist residents in their continuing relationship with the God whom they worship. The Chaplains profess a variety of faith backgrounds and minister to all who seek the reassurance and comfort of remembering that God does not forget those whom he calls and loves as dear children. The Chaplains are integral members of the health care team who visit, pray, and celebrate the common rituals that are expressive of the patients' lives of faith. In addition, Chaplains are also available to those who seek the services of Carondelet Home Health.

In whatever the setting, the Chaplains are concerned with both patient care in all of our facilities as well as recovery at home. For those who suffer the loss of a loved one, there are grief support groups moderated by the department. The Spiritual Care Department, aided by a staff of trained volunteers also works to link patients and residents with their home faith communities.

Chaplains are available 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies and requests for their presence. In addition, all care centers provide chapels that are always open and available to all who seek a quiet place for prayer and reflection. Carondelet Health prides itself on providing care for those who come, quality care of the spirit as well as the body.
