Our History
Together St. Joseph and St. Mary’s Medical Centers have offered Kansas Citians and surrounding communities more than 200 years of service.
Founded in 1874 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Joseph Medical Center is the oldest private hospital in Kansas City. In 1905, St. Mary’s Hospital of Kansas City was founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and in 1981, St. Mary’s Hospital of Blue Springs, later named St. Mary’s Medical Center opened to respond to the health care needs in eastern Jackson and western Lafayette counties. In 1987, St. Mary’s opened the first hospital-based birthing center in the state of Missouri.
On January 1, 1994, St. Mary’s Medical Center exchanged sponsorship with a hospital in the St. Louis area, making St. Mary’s a member of Carondelet Health System. In 1997, St. Joseph and St. Mary’s Medical Centers joined forces as Carondelet Health offering 439 licensed beds, 432 long-term care beds and a medical staff of nearly 1,000 physicians representing more than 40 medical specialties. In 2002, St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Centers joined Ascension Health.
